Clarifying copyright, i. e. Urheberrecht and droit d’auteur, is the abstract counterpart of provenance research. Whereas provenance research concerns material claims to a work of art or a cultural object, copyright research in Europe concerns claims to a range of economic and use rights related to individual works and an artist’s estate. We work with legal counsel to clarify the rights of heirs under E. U. and national copyright laws, including such matters as licensing, exhibition rights, image reproduction rights, resale rights (Folgerecht, droit de suite) and the status of so-called orphaned works.
